Why You Need to Declutter your Home

Many of us who are looking to move are not really worried about decluttering. Instead, our minds are focused on organizing the move. Getting the date for the movers to come, ensuring everything is packed and finding a new house to move into. However, decluttering is one of the main things that you should be doing before any move! Why is this?

  1. If you do have a home that you are trying to sell before a move, decluttering is going to allow you to only keep the bare minimum in the home. This gives the illusion of a blank slate to most potential buyers, increasing the chances of the person being interested and buying this!
  2. If you declutter now, there is less to pack. And if there are less boxes, you will have less to move in the long run! Remember, if you pack all the clutter, you must unpack this later!
  3. Decluttering can be a way to cleanse your life and start new. And for many people this is exactly the type of feeling that they want when they move into a new home!

Tips for Decluttering

With it being known just how important it is to declutter your home, here are a few tips to help you along the way!

  1. Look in your closet, if it has not been worn in the past year, toss it or donate it someone who may want to wear it weekly!
  2. Declutter one room at a time, and do not leave that room until you have taken out all the clutter,
  3. A new rule to put into your life, the “in-out rule”. This rules states that for every one new item you bring into a home, toss one old item out. This can be a great rule for when you do complete the decluttering.
  4. Ask yourself if you really need an item, if you hesitate, then chances are you do not need it!
  5. Have boxes set up for what you want to keep, toss, giveaway or donate. This will make the entire process a bit easier.
  6. Get everyone in the home involved. If you have a family, chances are you didn’t save all of this on your own, so get everyone involved in the process!

Decluttering may not be fun, but if you do this before a move, you are going to find that it allows the move to flow more smoothly. And remember, here at Excel Moving we have tools to help with the clutter, storage units to put items inside and of course, our dedicated moving services!

The Challenges of Moving Locally

moving locally

Moving locally is something that many people think would be the easier option when it comes to moving. Here at Excel we can help with long distance or local moves. However, we want to warn our customers that moving locally may not be as easy as you think. Moving around the corner, down the block or just across town has its own set of challenges when compared to a long-distance move.

Challenge #1: Easier to Hold onto Belongings

One of the best things about a move is that you can take this time to purge. However, when you are moving locally, many people simply move everything. This can be a challenge when you are downsizing, and it also leads to holding onto those things that you no longer need.

Challenge #2: Moving Locally Results in No Preparation

One of the main challenges we see when going to move someone locally is that they have not prepared their items to be moved. For example, they may stuff many things into bags and just hope for the best. They feel that since the truck is not going a long distance, there is no reason to put everything into properly labeled boxes that are sturdy. However, remember, even a ride across town in the back of any vehicle can cause damage to items. And you are still moving, so the tips that we have given about packing still need to be observed!

Challenge #3: You Never Embrace your New Area

For those who move locally, they may never embrace all that their new area offers. For example, there may be an excellent dog park right around the corner, however, you will probably still drive to the old one since it is not that far away. This type of action can make it harder for a person to adjust to their new area and truly enjoy it, as they are always going back to their old neighborhood.

Remember, local moves can be a great option for someone who finds their dream home or they simply want to move to a new area. However, treat this as you would any move. Pack your items properly, get rid of those things that you no longer need and fully embrace your new neighborhood. And remember, we are here for all your moving needs!

overseas move

If you currently live in North Carolina, moving overseas can be a huge change! After all, you may be moving to an area in which you do not know the language, the people or even the customs of those who live here. On top of this, you still must move your items to this new location! Do not do this on your own, as you are going to find that there are specific regulations that should be followed when an overseas move.

What Are These Regulations?

The regulations from an overseas move whether you move from North Carolina or other locations are going to find that customs will have several steps you must clear before your items are moved. One of the biggest things that you must have to move your items overseas is through a packing list.

This packing list should include serial numbers, models and make for electronics or appliances that you may be moving.  There are other items that must be listed individually, such as:

  • Musical instruments
  • Sporting equipment
  • Exercise equipment
  • Carpets, including the sizes of these
  • Items that are used outside of the house such as grills, pools, etc.

Other items such as clothing, books, dishware, toys, and the like can usually be categorized rather largely, rather than having to list these individually and description.

Having a Floor Plan Before a Move

floor plan

When you are preparing for a move, you are often told by numerous people who have moved before that having a floor plan of your new home is a must have. Why is this? It can make a move into this home much easier if you have this. While most people cannot get an actual blueprint layout of their new home, you can make your own to reference. All you will need:

  1. Photos of the room can be helpful to help you visualize where you want items placed
  2. The room measurements including where doors are located, walls and the like
  3. A large piece of paper or poster board to draw this onto

Once you have this information, here are some tips for how to put this information to good use:

  • Use post it notes to add these into the rooms labeled with piece of furniture.
  • Prioritize which room should be completed first.
  • This will also allow you to make a list of items that may not fit into your new home and whether you should get rid of these or put these into storage.
  • Have a plan for where to tell movers to place things, which in the end will make your move in process much easier!
  • This can also be helpful in loading the truck, if you are doing this on your own. However, with Excel Moving, you can rest assure that however the truck is packed, your items will be secure and everything will be placed where it needs to be placed that day.

Keep in mind that there are several programs online that will help you in drawing out a floor plan if you are short on time and cannot do this one your own. And these programs are relatively easy to use for anyone, even if you are not a budding architect!

Also, be sure that you are starting to compile moving supplies together for the day in which you move.

4 Weeks Out

This is the time to make final travel arrangements. For example, are you going to need to stay in a hotel once the moving company takes your belongings? Do you need to arrange for a vehicle to be shipped? Perhaps you need a dog sitter during the move? These are all aspects in which you will want to arrange now!

3 Weeks Until Move Out Day

You should be starting on the packing process. During this time pack:

  • Non-essential items such as non-seasonal clothing, family photos, photos on the walls, etc.
  • Start to make those small repairs to the home that you may need to, such as repairing holes and the like
  • Start the process of changing your address on the mail

2 Weeks to Move

This is the time to be focused on packing. You should aim for packing at least one room every two days, depending upon the size of your home. Be sure that you are not packing those things that you need to use every day just yet. This is also the time in which you should start setting up dates for cutting off water and electricity for your current home.

Moving Plan: One Week to Move

Almost all the packing should be completed, except for those rooms that you use most such as the kitchen and bedroom. This is the time to focus on those last-minute details such as having medications moved to a new pharmacy, getting a sitter for the kids or pets, or the like.

The day before the movers arrive, be sure that you pack up the kitchen and those items that you have been using daily. Then sit back and let the movers take care of the rest!
