One of the most common obstacles that is faced when you move is transitioning from one home to another. This is complicated even more when you still own the one home you are moving out of, and are moving into a home that was just purchased. One of the most common fears that people have in this situation is their old home. With burglaries happening throughout the United States, a vacant home is almost like a welcoming card to those who are looking to rob a home or cause damage to a home. So, what can you do? We have a few tips for those who are moving out of a home, but are still owners until they sell!

  1. Consider asking someone who is local to check in on the house. If there are people who are monitoring the home, thinking that it would be an easy target, when a person keeps showing up at random times throughout the day or week, they are going to back off!
  2. Exterior lights that are on timers are a great way to make a statement! If you time these to come on as soon as it is dark, it is going to make people think that there is someone who is staying in the home. You can even use this with the interior lights as well!
  3. Security cameras set up around the home can be instant detour to those who are up to no good. You can find very inexpensive sets to utilize that you can monitor from your home computer or even your cell phone.
  4. Get a security system! You can find that these are rather inexpensive when you compare just how much they could save you in the long run. Shop around and check out the offers. Remember, this could be a way to get even more value out of your home when it goes on the market.

In a perfect world, you would sell your old home then move into a new home within a week or so of each other. However, that is not always what happens. Several of our clients are moving out of their old home while it is still on the market, waiting to get sold. If this is the case, be sure that you take the time to add in a few safety precautions to keep it safe! And remember, for help with your move, Excel is here for you!
