A Checklist for Your Upcoming Move

Any more, whether this is large or small, is going to have its own level of stress associated with it. However, one of the key components of getting through any move is to ensure that you are preparing for your move in the proper method. That is why we have created a checklist of items that you are going to want to have on hand, along with things you need to know, before your move.

  1. Have enough packing supplies on hand

These packing supplies will include:

  • Cardboard boxes of numerous sizes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing peanuts
  • Fresh newspaper
  • Plastic wrap
  • Packing tape
  • Box cutter
  • Permanent markers for labeling
  1. Start packing in a logical manner

Be sure that you are packing in a logical manner so that the packing will go smoother. Consider these tips:

  • Pack those offseason things first
  • Then go to the storage items you may need to pack
  • Rooms that are not in use
  • As time gets closer, start packing those everyday items that you can do without until everything is packed
  1. Lists are helpful

It is helpful to have lists of things that you need to do before the move. For example, make a list of who to contact before your big move, of other things to do such as change of address, and whatever other items you need to do. These lists can make your move that much more organized.

Remember, the more prepared you are for your move, you are going to find that it goes smoother. Every checklist out there is going to be different, as the list is going to contain different items that are of importance to that person. In the end, moving is difficult. But, if you use a professional mover like Excel Moving you will find that your move will be that much easier!

How to do a Moving Inventory

moving inventory

Almost everyone realizes that moving does require having an inventory of some sort. The reason being is that when you have an inventory list, you are going to be well organized. This organization ensures that you are not going to lose any of your belongings while moving. With this being said, there is more to a moving inventory than simply documenting what is in boxes. It does require a little time and planning, but in the end, you are going to be better off for doing this.

Pre-Packing Walkthrough for a Moving Inventory

One of the first things that you need to do is a pre-packing walkthrough. Many people utilize their cell phones and capture a video or numerous pictures of what they are going to be packing. Be sure that you get close ups of very valuable items along with serial numbers for televisions and the like. The more information that you have now, the easier it will be later if there is something that goes missing or becomes broken.

Have a Labeling System

We have discussed just how important a labeling system is for those who are packing. So you need to find the one way in which you want to label that makes sense to you. We often recommend the idea of a color coding system in which each room is given its own color, and you can also utilize a listing method on these boxes so that you know where certain items are in these boxes.

Have a Master List

Be sure that you have a master list of the items that you are packing and moving. A master list is going to include what is in the box, the box color (if using a color coding system), along with the number of the box or other identifying information. Be sure that you keep this master list with you throughout the move. Once you are at your new home, this list is going to be the only way to tell if you are getting all of your belongings together in your new home.

While your items are being unpacked, be sure that you are checking off boxes as they are arriving. This will be much easier to do now, than trying to do this after everything is unpacked. This is one reason why you need to be present when your items are delivered by the moving company. What happens if there is an issue? We hope there aren’t any issues, but accidents do happen. In the event that there is an issue with your moving inventory and what has arrived, then you need to tell your movers immediately and contact the office. From here, we can work with you to figure out a solution that meets your needs.
